Are japs as anal about what you say or do before you renew your Visa as americans sometimes get? I've heard horror stories about some spic friends immigrating and the whole Visa process and the only person I know that is in Japan is a Master's student and he seems to have it easy

This is one of those instances where it's better safe than sorry given how unhinged/severe the consequences can be should they find something they can nitpick about non-compliance.
