I think it's less about resentment for the child, and more that taking on responsibility for a child is a lot of fucking work, and her own kids are in their teens now so she's probably long done dealing with all the annoying little kid shit.

I think expecting a family to willingly take on that responsibility just because the kid is related to the teenagers is unreasonable.
